Decent Affordable Housing
Habitat for Humanity (Charleston) is a Christian housing ministry that seeks to build decent, affordable housing for low- to moderate income families. They work with long-term clients. The entire process of application submission and house building may take as long as a year. The houses are built and sold at cost to clients. Orientation and application periods for clients seeking housing occur semi-annually. Charleston Habitat for Humanity is associated with the Charleston and North Charleston Housing Initiative (CANCHI). Charleston Habitat for Humanity needs construction site skilled and unskilled volunteers. Electricians, plumbers, masons, and carpenters who have time for pro bono work are always needed. They conduct work site training every Saturday before work begins, build houses Wednesday through Saturday from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM., and urge volunteers to spend whatever time they can to help on the job sites. Charleston Habitat for Humanity also needs volunteers to organize and price merchandise and assist customers at their Habitat Store Outlet. The Outlet was opened in September of 2001 as a means to raise funds and awareness of the mission of Charleston Habitat for Humanity. Selling new or gently used donated materials, they have been blessed with the support of the community as the outlet has raised enough funds to build 10 Habitat houses since opening.
