Housing from the Heart

Humanities Foundation, through its "ShelterNet Program" has helped over 6,000 people remain in their homes by providing one-time emergency financial assistance with rent, utility, or a mortgage payment. This is a program designed to meet the immediate financial needs of low-income families and individuals who are on the brink of homelessness. The average assistance provided in this situation is approximately $200. The households served by the ShelterNet Program have incomes at or below 50 percent of the area's median, although the vast majority of families it serves have incomes far below that level.

The Humanities Foundation works closely with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide apartments for low-income families displaced from their homes due to urban development, as well as persons over 55 and the homeless. The Humanities Foundation also provides families moving out of homelessness into permanent housing with household items essential for starting up a new home, e.g., linens, pots & pans, dinnerware, and cleaning materials through donations and generous discounts from local retailers.
