United Methodist Relief Center Home Repairs
Annually more than 2,000 volunteers give more than 50,000 hours of service doing home repairs with the United Methodist Relief Center (UMRC). Groups from churches, schools, businesses, clubs, and organizations gave days, weekends, or weeks to paint, re-roof, repair floors and walls, add vinyl siding, and other important rehabilitation. Assisted by trained construction managers, these teams helped make homes safe, dry and warm for mostly elderly, African Americans living on very limited income.
Teams were of all ages, genders, faiths, backgrounds, and from more than 17 States?all united to improve the lives of the most vulnerable of rural South Carolina?s Lowcountry homeowners. UMRC also sponsors a two-week service camp for at-risk teens in Pineville and Huger, South Carolina which gives on-the-job experience, as well as a small stipend. Teens, assisted by mentors, learn important work and life skills. Again in 2008, an international team of volunteers from Korea, Japan, Canada, Morocco, and Italy served with the UMRC. The UMRC also participates in special local events each year for Martin Luther King Day (January), Youth Service Day (April), and Trident United Way Day of Service (September.) AMERICORPS volunteers, seminary, and college interns are also important workers, too. Please contact Ellen Younker 843-884-4860 if YOU would like to volunteer. Volunteers are always welcome!
