There are more than 1,600 Methodist churches in South Carolina, including but not limited to the: South Carolina United Methodist Conference (SCUMC), African Methodist Episcopal (AME), African Methodist Episcopal Zion, Wesleyan, Free Methodist, and Southern Methodist Churches.

The largest denominations, SCUMC and the AME Church, sponsor many social ministries, including: hunger, poverty, homeless, housing, education, prison, health, aging, and disabled. For example, the United Methodist Volunteers In Mission (UMVIM) program, whose motto is "Christian Love In Action," provides short-term mission opportunities for volunteers at home and abroad.
